The language used in this article is informal this is important for the magazine’s image as the magazine tries to relate to the reader they use this technique so that the audience are more likely to want to read the magazine. The magazine also use’s slang words such as “swankiest” and “goon” this suggests that the article is not only for the older generation but the young generation as well as it is more likely for the younger generation to understand what they mean. However in the interview they use informal swearing and talk about “alcohol/drinking” this would relate to the older generation as this is something they frequently do. The interview is fairly formal with how the questions have been constructed one of the questions states:
“If you could be God for a day what would you do to make the world a better place?”
The reply to this was “id pee on everything” and “I don’t believe in God” this shows the informal language and also suggests this as being disrespectful this shows there image to be rude. The interview consists of questions from Slayer’s fans, from the ages of 12 to the age of 35 this shows how this article is aimed towards younger and older generations.
The colours Kerrang! has used in this article are White, Green and Black. The background is White which makes the other colours more vibrant and stand out; it also contrasts with the Black text and sets a professional quality to the magazine.
Simple text styles are used throughout the article such as Arial and Times New Roman; this is due to the legibility of the fonts, making it easy for any age group to read. Also these fonts hold a professional style to them. The larger text such as ‘Scarier’ still uses a simple font style, however, the word is distorted and has a grunge effect to making it look scratched and stand out more. This emphasises “slayers” image and the brand of the magazine.
The double page spread is laid out simply but effectively; a black & white image of Tom Arays and Kerry King from Slayer covers the left-hand page, there is a green borderline above this image running across the top of the double page spread to emphasise the article. The questions are constructed highlighted in green and in capitals so that the reader clearly understands what’s being said and can then go on to read the answers towards the questions; this is an automatic contrast to make the different texts stand out to the rest of the article. The pictures are constructed well as the band is a “metal band” the image works well in being black and white and wearing sun glasses to disguise there face almost suggesting that they are dark and mysterious. The tone of the magazine used when addressing the reader is an informed intelligent fan and possibly that of a friend, suggesting that they have a personal relationship with the reader “the fans” this suggests that they see there “fans” as there “friends”, fans t give support to the band just as they would give support to a friend, they hold knowledge of the band and its members, they show their loyalty and affection by attending gigs and purchasing merchandise
The style of the article matches the style of the front cover of the magazine as it obviously has to correspond with one another. I cannot see the article needing prior knowledge as it is expected that the reader should know who slayer is and what music genre they produce. The article Lay-Out is divided in to two pages, one for the image and another for the text. The image takes up the whole of the page and fills the frame; the picture also has some of the text on it to make the whole structure of the article look eye-catching.
