Double Spread Anaylsis 2

The band chosen to feature in the magazine Kerrang is “Slayer”, the band is an American metal genre band. Slayer is an older generation band, so the reader assume's the target audience for this particular article is based for people in their 20’s and upwards and possibly the odd group of teenagers who have an interest in this band.

The language used in this article is informal this is important for the magazine’s image as the magazine tries to relate to the reader they use this technique so that the audience are more likely to want to read the magazine. The magazine also use’s slang words such as “swankiest” and “goon” this suggests that the article is not only for the older generation but the young generation as well as it is more likely for the younger generation to understand what they mean. However in the interview they use informal swearing and talk about “alcohol/drinking” this would relate to the older generation as this is something they frequently do. The interview is fairly formal with how the questions have been constructed one of the questions states:
“If you could be God for a day what would you do to make the world a better place?”
The reply to this was “id pee on everything” and “I don’t believe in God” this shows the informal language and also suggests this as being disrespectful this shows there image to be rude. The interview consists of questions from Slayer’s fans, from the ages of 12 to the age of 35 this shows how this article is aimed towards younger and older generations.

The colours Kerrang! has used in this article are White, Green and Black. The background is White which makes the other colours more vibrant and stand out; it also contrasts with the Black text and sets a professional quality to the magazine.

Simple text styles are used throughout the article such as Arial and Times New Roman; this is due to the legibility of the fonts, making it easy for any age group to read. Also these fonts hold a professional style to them. The larger text such as ‘Scarier’ still uses a simple font style, however, the word is distorted and has a grunge effect to making it look scratched and stand out more. This emphasises “slayers” image and the brand of the magazine.

The double page spread is laid out simply but effectively; a black & white image of Tom Arays and Kerry King from Slayer covers the left-hand page, there is a green borderline above this image running across the top of the double page spread to emphasise the article. The questions are constructed highlighted in green and in capitals so that the reader clearly understands what’s being said and can then go on to read the answers towards the questions; this is an automatic contrast to make the different texts stand out to the rest of the article. The pictures are constructed well as the band is a “metal band” the image works well in being black and white and wearing sun glasses to disguise there face almost suggesting that they are dark and mysterious. The tone of the magazine used when addressing the reader is an informed intelligent fan and possibly that of a friend, suggesting that they have a personal relationship with the reader “the fans” this suggests that they see there “fans” as there “friends”, fans t give support to the band just as they would give support to a friend, they hold knowledge of the band and its members, they show their loyalty and affection by attending gigs and purchasing merchandise

The style of the article matches the style of the front cover of the magazine as it obviously has to correspond with one another. I cannot see the article needing prior knowledge as it is expected that the reader should know who slayer is and what music genre they produce. The article Lay-Out is divided in to two pages, one for the image and another for the text. The image takes up the whole of the page and fills the frame; the picture also has some of the text on it to make the whole structure of the article look eye-catching.

Double Spread Analysis Of A Magazine Article 1

This article “Rave the plant” is about a dance and club this suggests the target audience who would read this double spread article and listen to dance music are of the younger generation ages 18-25, I believe this because you have to be 18 years of age to get into a club and it is more commonly known for clubbers and ravers to be aged 18+ as this is the legal age to go “clubbing”. It is also about the club being environmentally friendly therefore it is also aimed at people who are interested in saving the environment. The language in the article is very technical and advanced using language such as “LED lights”, “millions of tonnes of co2” and “organic beer”. I noticed the language is very scientifically which aims to show the technical and fun side to clubbing aswell as keeping the environment safe.

They also use a lot of slang that relates to the clubbing scene and young generation “speech” such as ‘chewing the fat’, this will help the target audience to relate to the article, as they are likely to understand, it also draws them into wanting to read the magazine.
The colour scheme on this article is black, white, yellow, green and pink. The black helps the brightness of the pink and yellow to stand out causing a contrast and the pink and yellow represent the bright and crazy world of clubbing. These bright colours could also be foreshadowing the bright lasers and lights at the clubs.
The style of text used is quite standard plain written, however the titles at the beginning of the article are creative an funky this goes well with the theme of the article “raves/clubs”, the R at the beginning of the article is stylish then proceeds onto standard written, the article may have done this as wanting to use creative fonts in some parts to set the scene of hypnotising and how outrageous and exciting clubs are, this designates the club scene.

The article is mainly dominated by pictures of ravers and clubs which shows the magazine is most interested in the scene rather than what is being said, however the article does have a good amount of text too, so it levels out the distraction of pictures, the article used this clever technic to draw the reader in with pictures and after browsing the pictures of exciting clubs, and bright colours they are more intrigued to want to read the article.

The tone the article use’s is as if it is talking to someone who is very much in this sort of scene and is interested to know more about the club life. They come across as if people who will read this article will understand what they are meaning therefore the article use’s informal language.

The images in this article show the club as very bright, fun and a happy place to be as there are people smiling and dancing, there are many pictures of the LED lights and pictures of people having a good time which all makes the reader feel that it is a fun exciting place to be. I think this article does need prior knowledge to fully understand what is being said, as it may be hard for some people to understand knowledge of the environment and clubbing scene. The article also hasn’t stated where the place is or why it is so special they therefore expect that the reader already knows about it and knows about clubbing and environment.

Questionnaire And Results

I had created a Questionnaire so that i know the features that majority of people would like to see in my final magazine i asked a random sample of 30. I had done 7 closed questions and 3 open questions so I could get quick standard answers along with a different range of answers. The Questions are as follows:

The results i gained are as follows:
Question 1:
Question 2: Question 3: Question 4: Question 5:
Question 6:
Question 7:
Closed Questions
Question 1

This question is helpful for me to know how often my audience would like the magazine to be produced, as the price of my magazine is ranged around £2 and the fact I want freebees to be given, a fortnightly magazine corresponds well.
Question 2
The majority age group who answered this questionnaire was between 14-19, this is good as I stated in my “planning” that’s my magazine will be mainly aimed towards the younger generation. It also enables me to figure out the types of things that should go into the magazine as I know it can influence people who read it.
Question 3

This question helps me to understand whether my audience would like any other special features to be with the magazine for them to want to buy it, it also helps me disguise
The price of my magazine as I know giving freebees away in the magazine the production would cost more therefore it is obvious that my magazine would cost more than £1.
Question 4

This question helps me to understand if my audience want to know about artist lifestyle, as my magazine is music based having this feature in my magazine will make it more interesting which is why stated this question to see firstly if it goes well with my audience and to see if it is a good idea.
Question 5

This question is beneficial as it helps me distinguish the most attractive thing my audience likes in a music magazine and I can make sure I meet my audiences expectations. Along with ensuring I produce the most favourite attractions in the magazine so that they wish to buy it.
Question 6

The majority of people stated that they would pay £1.50 however through looking at my questionnaire results and planning of my magazine I have decided to range the price around £2. As I would like to produce this magazine every fortnight and give freebees to the readers so they are enthusiastic to want to buy the magazine all the time. I believe £2.10 is a good selling price as it is in the price range of the feedback received from the questionnaire, and would also help in ensuring I can produce the magazine to high quality.

Question 7

The majority of people who had answered this questionnaire were female. This could signify that women have more of an interest in magazines than men.
This corresponds with my “planning of a music magazine”. As my target audience is for both male and female and from my results I had feedback from both genders so I know that both genders would be interested in it, females being the majority.

Open Questions

What type of music genre do you like?

As this was an open question I received a lot of different kind of answers the majority of answers were indie, rock and heavy metal. However many people stated that they liked R&B, Hip Hop, trance and club music. Based on my results and own personal interest in music I am going to base my magazine on indie, rock and heavy metal this was the majority people had stated they like and I also have an interest in these genres of music. This question also relates to style genre I stated in my planning of my magazine.

Who is your favourite band?

For this question I got a wide range of answers, as the majority of people stated they liked indie, rock, and heavy metal. I got similar results of bands such as artic monkeys; bring me the horizon, linkin park, Queen and many others. Other results I obtained were pink, bass hunter, pretty Ricky, rhinana. This also helps me to understand who I should h

Who is your favourite artist?

The majority of people who had answered the questionnaire stated that there favourite artist was Hayley Williams, Ollie Sykes and pink, these artist corresponds well with the genre of my magazine which is indie, rock and heavy metal. Other artist that’s people had stated was rhianna, Justin Timberlake, Leona lewis.

Preliminary Task [A College Magazine]

I firstly took a picture of some students, out of my photos I selected a few that I would like to use in my magazine, I uploaded them onto the computer from a digital camera. I then used Photoshop to make any edits to the photo’s, erasing the background, then after saving it uploaded it into adobe Illustrator and completed the task. I could therefore use fonts, backgrounds, text and other features required in a magazine.

I titled my magazine ‘The College Life’ as I thought it relates well with my main image as it is of a college student and college is the progress to become a better successful person later on in life. I added the necessities of any magazine; a title, sell lines and a barcode. Overall I think my magazine looks unprofessional, however considering this was my first time producing a magazine I believe the preliminary task helped me to gain a lot of skills and helped me to learn Photoshop and illustrator well, it also enabled me to realise I need to add a lot more professional features to my final magazine. It helped me to get a better understanding of the media industry and how a lot of time and effort needs to go into making the magazine to profection.

The main image was poorly constructed on the page as I gave it a special effect in Photoshop to make it look materialised it looked unprofessional and had no meaning within the magazine, I therefore know to ensure that I keep the magazine tidy as well as interesting the reader, the picture was rough around the edges a skill I learnt from adobe illustrator was feathering I therefore made the picture slightly more tidy. The sell lines within the preliminary task were good for the magazine being a school magazine as I has sell lines such as “how to get better marks”, “interview with top a-level student” these sell lines entice students to want to read the magazine. The colour scheme is good and not over crowded with different colours plain colours of black, white, Blue and pink.

Most magazine's use the colour scheme of Black & White as it gives the magazine a mature and professional look, so this was good to have within my preliminary magazine and something I will consider to use in my “final magazine”. Other good features are the star promoting “free” this would attract someone to get the magazine. Although the magazine is still plain and hasn’t got any eye-catching features or BOLD colours that will interest the reader.
In my college contents page I used different font types and I used the same colours throughout the page. The disadvantage of using different font types is it makes the magazine look untidy and unprofessional; I also used a different font type for my title “contents” the font did not suite the magazine as it is more of a cartoon style writing. The contents page was a little plain however the information on the contents was straight forward therefore the reader knows exactly what relevant page they are going to. The photos on the contents page had not been edited in photoshop so did not look very professional however they were good shot photos for a “college magazine”.

The structure of the preliminary contents page helped me to distinguish that for my final “music magazine” the contents page needs to be appealing to the audience and have good professional images as well as more features in the magazine and preferable freebee’s to make the magazine more appealing and people wishing to purchase the magazine.

I also know that for my final magazine I should have similar fonts and keep to the same colour scheme as well as the colour scheme being the same or similar to the front cover, this will keep the magazines appearance looking sophisticated and professional. I will also ensure that the magazine doesn’t look to plain and boring and I will also add promotions to make the magazine more eye-catching.

The Evolution of Britney Spears

In this first cover, Britney is only aged 17 she is shown to be in less clothing so that it attracts the male gender to wish to buy the magazine. The framing of the magazine shows off her body and makes Britney more attractive and shows off the most attractive features of her body, her legs are also half cropped off so the male gender can just concentrate on her attractive features. The photos is a high angle shot so the audience can see Britney more clearly and focus more on her, the fact she is laying on bed sheets makes the magazine look sexy.
What Britney is wearing suggests that her image is to be sexy and attractive; these features would be highly attractive to men.
The props being used is a phone this could suggest her talking to the magazine and growing up being the typical teenager, the other prop used is a teddy teletubbie which could suggest her coming out of her childhood.
The setting used for the photo is silky pink covers; this could suggest sexiness, as it’s pink and girly. As its silky this could also suggest her womanly features of being soft. Silk sheets could also suggest lust.
The main colour scheme is pink and white, the pink could suggest her being girly and the white could suggest her being pure, these colours are attractive for her appearance.

In the second cover we notice Britney’s change in appearance. She’d around 20 years of age and the audience notices how her photo seems to be sexier confident, she has less clothing on which still shows that Britney is a attraction to males who buy the magazine. The image has cropped her thighs which emphasises her body more and her lady features. The image is a mid shot which could suggest her being more confident as the camera is closer towards her than in the previous magazine.
Britney’s appearance in choice of clothing is that it shows how sexual she is by the fact she has hardly any clothing on. The way Britney is structured on the page the reader notices that there is a sexual relationship as the magazine states “Britney on Justin that kiss and being alone”, could suggest her influence on men.
She uses the colour white a lot and white represents purity, this is quite ironic as she is presented in sexual way, and her posture is very confident in her sexuality, she almost represents a “sex Goddess”. The way the lighting hits her is cleverly structured as it hits her main features such as breast, bum and her hair and face this highlights her looking glamorous.
The photo is mid-shot, so we can she her body features aswell as facial expression.

In the third cover, the shot is a close up so that the audiences can see her facial expressions, the fact the sell line/anchorage text states “inside an American tragedy” show that the close up shot is relevant, as we can see her sad face which corresponds to the sell line. The photos are also in black and it could suggest looking back into the past it’s a good nostalgia. There are not a lot of main sell lines and doesn’t want to over crowd Britney’s face the magazine. This connotes she is the main feature within the magazine, wants to keep the audience interested in Britney’s personal life. Britney spears distracts the reader with her close up shot as it is close and personal as if indicating that the reader is close and personal with Britney spears life, this is a good selling point as people would be interested to know about Britney spears. As the previous magazines suggested getting inside her body, this magazine is indicating getting inside her mind the reader knows this through the shot of just her face. The anchorage of the text corresponds with the picture as states Britney and the picture is Britney as well as “tragedy” and the photo is a close up in black and white seeing a sad expression on Britney’s face.

Anaylsis Of A Contents page

The main feature is a large square surrounded by smaller squares. The top square being the largest draws the most attention to it which shows it is the main story which needs the most attention. The image is the band biffy clyro; the lead singer is in a pose that connotes flamboyance and showing off and we can gather he is saying ‘look at me’ with that pose which connotes the ego of famous people and suits being a main image in a magazine.

The colours are black, white and yellow. The font is the same as the front cover which relates the two as does the colour scheme. The black and white indicates the rock and roll world as dark and mysterious yet the yellow brings vibrance to the page which attracts the reader and disguises the pages to the reader so they can go straight to the relevant page to the topic they wish to read.

This contents page is very neat and organised; there is nothing to confuse you and every picture has an anchorage text.

There is a promotion on the page about getting the magazine delivered to your door, it denotes the company has the customer’s convenience in mind and the promotion being red is eye catching so the readers attention goes to the promotion as it differs from the colour scheme which implies that this promotion needs attention and it is important which is why it has to be a different colour.

At the top left hand corner they have a small image of the front cover to remind the reader of the name of the magazine as well as a short paragraph introducing this week’s magazine, this is also present In the contents page to link the front cover and contents page together. The logo isn’t present on the page as a logo steals attention away from the stories and promotion, this implies how the magazine values there stories more than the logo and think the stories is the best thing to focus the readers attention on. Also because the colour scheme and font ties in with the front cover there is no need to link the two using a logo. Kerrang keeps their pages cohesive by the colour scheme and font and also the square images; this shows that they are organised and united.

Anaylsis Of A Contents Double spread page

Vogue has constructed its Contents Page based with 3 main images surrounded and framed by text, each image decreases in size. The layout of the contents page and the images used, we can assume that Vogue is obviously a high-fashion magazine and is intended for those who love fashion we can tell this by its use of pictures and contents sections such as “beauty”, “coverlook” and “fashion”. The three colours that are used in this content page are Black, White and Red. White and Black are contrasting colours which immediately grabs the audience’s attention, White and Black are also sophisticated and professional colours. Vogue has also added Red into the magazine’s colour scheme as it adds some colour and life to the contents page as Red is a bold colour that makes a statement and attracts the reader. The hint of Red throughout the contents page will grab the audience’s attention. The font style that is used in Vogue’s contents page is simple and easy to read yet has a professional appearance. The font styles and colours used in the contents page relate to the style of the front cover as the same colour scheme is used with the exception of the colour Red.
The front cover uses Fuchsia instead of Red. The same principal is applied with the font scheme as they use different font styles yet still use a similar colour scheme.

The information is organized in a way that makes it accessible to the audience; the subtitles and page numbers are clearly labeled, each page advertised on the contents has its own little summary to tell you what the page consists of.

The different sections shown on the Vogue Magazine Contents Page are as follows: Cover Stories, Fashion, Special Features, Focus, Vogue Shops, In Vogue, View & Lifestyle, Spy, Regulars and Beauty. These sections in the magazine tell us as an interpreter that they are passionate about fashion and all the elements of it, as they cover every aspect of the Fashion Industry.

The promotional features of this particular magazine are that they advertise what the model in the front cover is wearing; they tell you the cost and where you can find it, they also tell you the model’s hair stylist and the photographer from the photo shoot.

The graphical features that are used to draw the reader’s attention to special features are the images. The logo is placed on the top of each page near the spine of the magazine; the logo is very dominant as it is bold and fairly large.

From the magazine’s contents page we can assume there are no franchises associated with this brand, as there are none visible. We can conclude that the overall style and design of the contents page is relevant to the magazine’s front cover.

Analysis Of A Music Magazine Contents Page

The magazine “Kerrang” has a nice simple contents page which is shown to be neat and tidy and easily tells the reader what to expect to read when buying the magazine. The contents page uses a good amount of pictures and doesn’t over crowd the contents page, these photos have been constructed in separate boxes emphasising to the reader each individual photo, they have constructed the images by placing them in squares to make them stand out, adding to this effect there are 8 smaller images framing a larger image, from this we can assume the larger image is the main sell line. The colour scheme of the contents page is similar to the front cover this corresponds well and won’t confuse the reader with overloading the magazine with different colours. The colour scheme is black, yellow, red, white and grey. The audience for this magazine is around 14+ as the magazine uses strong language and has a mixture of young and old generation of music.

Kerrang has used images the Contents Page; they have constructed the images by placing them in squares to make them stand out, adding to this effect there are 8 smaller images framing a larger image, from this we can assume the larger image is the main sell line.

The font styles used are quite bold, the use of the colour yellow corresponds well in showing the reader what things to look at within the magazine, the yellow highlights the page numbers and the title “contents” is written in yellow also making it stand out. The photos are also all of equal size apart from the main large photograph which emphasises to the reader to go to the relevant page relating to that photo, this is a good feature to have in a contents page as it draws the reader into wanting to buy the magazine and find out more. The colours and font styles on the contents page are similar to the one on the front cover, when there is smaller writing the colours and font is the same as when there is big writing the front cover and contents page use the same style writing for emphasises main features within the magazine and the strap lines and teasers.

Promotional features on the contents page is at the bottom right hand side
They have stated get kerrang delivered to your door. They also tempt the reader to want to do this by stating “get a discount”. Another promotion they have on the contents page is “poster special” this will entice the reader to want to have this magazine for its additional features of giving something to the reader.

The contents page has a small portrait size photo of the front cover in the corner this emphasises the logo and the magazine itself. The logo on the contents page isn’t very dominant on the page as doesn’t want to over load the reader in continuously reminding them of the logo.

The overall contents page relates well with the front cover as corresponds well with the use of pictures and the style writing along with the colour scheme. It is constructed neatly and is easy to understand.

We can assume that the overall style of the magazine is a Rock Magazine just from the images used and its intended audience is around the ages 14+ as the magazine use’s harsh language and the age limit to get into gigs of this genre is 14+.

Analysis Of A Music Magazine Front Cover

Title: Vibe
The title Vibe is printed in a bold so that it stands out to the reader and they know that the magazine is famous, the reader can also tell this by the fact the main image is in front of the writing, having bold writing also makes it easier for the reader too read and understand what’s being said. The title is also printed in a vibrant orange colour to attract the reader’s attention. The definition of vibe could suggest the emotional reactions between people or the atmosphere of the place; this may also suggest a musical interpretation, as in you get a vibe from the type of music you listen to.

Colour Scheme:

The colour scheme of Vibe consists of 4 colours, orange, blue, black and white they contrast one after another on the page. These colours give a sense of maturity and youth. The magazine is set out in a specific organised style black and white suggesting maturity and orange and blue suggesting fun and excitement.

Strap Line:
‘He’s Free, but Is He good? The Untold Story of Bust Rhymes.’
This strap line situated at the top of the magazine, above the masthead (title) to entice the reader to purchase the magazine, as it is also a sell line. And it draws the reader in by the usage of “untold story” making the reader want to find out more about this story and therefore purchasing the magazine.

Main Image: Janet Jackson
The main image of Vibe for this month is Janet Jackson. Janet is a middle aged woman but is perceived as an image for youth a role model to the younger generation aswell as the older generation. Dressed in a black mesh top, white tank top and denim jeans, accessorized with chain buckle bracelets gives the reader an illusion of a rebellious youth and her using a camera could suggest how every snap shot of your life counts so enjoy being young, it could also represent the paparazzi who take snap shots of her an she’s stating she’s doing it back through her picture.

Sell Lines
Lead Story: ‘Janet Jackson Likes To Watch’. Watch what? This is the question the readers will be asking themselves and what will entice them to purchase the magazine to find out what she likes to watch. The fact she’s also a role model people who look up to her will be interested in what she’s interested in so they can be more like her therefore are drawn into wanting to purchase the magazine.
Other sell lines such as ‘A History of Hip Hop Paparazzi’ goes well with janets photo as she is holding a camera and paparazzi take snap shots of celebrities the reader would want to no more about it as it states “history” the reader knows that it will be what’s happened before in hip hop and will have an interest in this.
