Magazine Front Cover Anaylsis

Nme is a music magazine based on the genres dance, alternative and indie. The reader can assume this by the magazines appearance and use of bands as states “rock ‘n’ roll party”, along with having the band scissor sisters which is a dance genre band. From the front cover we can assume that music based articles are going to be presented in the magazine.

The target audience for the magazine is around the ages 14+ as this is the age for people to be able to go to concerts to see bands. I also believe this to be the age as it has younger generations of music. The magazine also appeals to be for both male and female; we can assume this by the main image of a band consisting of both genders.

The central image in the magazine is using a direct mode of address as they are looking straight at the reader, the man at the front points at the reader and the women’s hand suggests “come closer”, this feature draws the reader to the magazine. This shows that they want a personal relationship with the reader as each person on the front cover has a different emotion on there face but they are all looking directly at the reader.
The scissor sisters are on the front cover as they are the main feature within the magazine and are being interviewed about there concert in Glastonbury, people would be interested to know about this as Glastonbury is a famous concert staring loads of famous bands, as the concert festival is very famous it draws the reader in to find out more the image for scissor sisters corresponds well as they are framed in long shot view and are able to see there facial expressions drawing us into the magazine.

The anchorage text is “scissor sisters” this relates to the photo of scissor sisters this implies that the band is important and the main feature within the magazine. The overall message the cover picture is stating is that they are a strong band and want the reader to find out more about them.

Other band/groups are suggested in the magazine such as “white stripes” and “the streets”, white strips are presented in a strap line it states “why they can be banned from your TV” this will attract the reader to want to know why? And what have they done to be banned therefore buying the magazine and reading to find out more. The streets are presented in a sell line stating they are going to opera this will be interesting for the reader to find out what happened and were they are going.

The magazine presents a “buzz” word “EXTRA” this is an advantage for the magazine as the reader feels they are getting there moneys worth “extra pull out posters” this draws the reader in as they will get a freebee along with the magazine.

The design of the title is appealing as it is in bold and is in the top left hand corner not overcrowding the page; the bold red is eye-catching and corresponds well with the colour scheme background of the magazine.

The colour scheme of the magazine is black, white, red and blue black and white being contrasting colours and sophisticated and red a blue being vibrant and exciting these colours stand out to the reader. I find these colours attractive and eye-catching and they correspond well with the costumes of the main image.
The puff suggests that people who buy the magazine also have an interest in concerts as well as music. The strategies the magazine used to attract the reader was bold fonts which are easy to read and understand.

Magazine Front Cover Anaylsis

The magazine “Rolling Stone” is an appealing magazine to both genders it is most likely a magazine based for the younger generation as it talks about young famous celebrities from “Britney” and “Justin”. It would also be eye-catching to males as the “main image” of celebrity Britney looks appealing sexually and as she is wearing less clothing this would attract males to want to buy the magazine, her posture also indicates her being sexual and confident she comes across as a sexual Goddess. The magazine also has attractions for women to want to buy it as sell line “on Justin that kiss and being alone” would attract women to want to find out the rest of the story also as it is about “MALE” Justin. Britney uses a lot of white in this front cover, the colour white is symbolic for purity but the magazine contradicts this by Britney looking sexual as if suggesting she wants to reader to be close with her body.

The magazine has kept to a sensible colour scheme so it would not over-load the appearance of the magazine. The magazine use no more than four colours: white, blue, black, and red. There is also not an overloading amount of text this is so the reader can focus more on Britney’s appearance before reading about what they will find in the magazine.

The masthead had been brought to the back of “Britney’s head” showing that this is a popular well known magazine as a few words are missing, so if you weren’t familiar with the magazine you may not understand what the full name of the magazine is. However it is able to do this as it is well known it also gives the magazine a more appealing structure as the main image is more focus’s on.

From the front cover of this magazine the reader can tell that the type of music articles will be pop/R&B/Hip hop type of music. The anchorage text has a meaning to the picture as it states “Britney” and the main image is Britney. This implies Britney as an artist is famous and successful. This would make the reader want to buy the magazine as they know that Britney is doing well and the reader would want to find out more.

The use of font style are all very similar with a range of around 3 front styles in bold, there is also a lot of capitals used in some of the sell lines. The font sizes are also all of similar size, however some larger than others so that it stands out to the reader more.

The main strategies the magazine uses to influence the reader into buying the magazine is the main image “Britney” as she looks sexy, young and exciting, this would be highly attractive to men, another strategy used so that it also attracts women is the lead story stating “Justin” as he is also another attractive artist that would appeal highly to women.
